PARKS & RECREATION DIRECTOR
The Town of Granby is looking for the next great leader of our Recreation and Parks programs! This is a full-time, benefited position starting at $90,275 annually. Insurance (medical, dental, vision, and pet care), retirement, and paid time off are all provided.
The Parks & Recreation Director is responsible for the overall programs and operations of the Recreation Department including after school and summer day camp and community sporting, educational, and recreation events and leagues. As current planning efforts evolve, the Director will also be responsible for the oversight of parks and trails, and potentially the planning, development, and implementation of a new recreational facility.
The ideal candidate will be a flexible, hands-on leader committed to meeting diverse community needs while strategically advancing parks and recreation services in Granby. This position will also manage major capital projects and long-range planning to elevate the role of recreation in the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, organize, and supervise year-round recreation programs that include educational, athletic, and community events. Creates the Summer and Winter/Spring Activity Guides and monitors each programs registration and payments with particular attention to high demand services such as Day Camp. Also develops, schedules, and promotes activities.
Oversee the utilization of the Towns recreational facilities, including parks, trails, sports fields, and open space. Creates and monitors policies on facility use, rental procedures, and safety protocols.
Brings to life the recommendations highlighted in the Updated Parks Master Plan and the planning, maintenance, and improvements of the Towns trail systems.
Manage the feasibility study for the development of a new Recreation Center, including research, contractor/consultant coordination, and stakeholder communication.
Develop and implement long-range strategic and capital improvement plans for parks, trails, and recreational facilities aligned with Town goals and budgetprocess. Research and present capital spending requests
for approval while also monitoring current year budget spending.
Collaborate with Public Works and other departments to verify maintenance standards and to ensure full utilization of parks and trail infrastructure.
Seek funding opportunities including grants and sponsorships to support parks, trails, and facility development. Develops, writes, implements and monitors all recreation grants in coordination with department staff.
Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (e.g., ADA) and sustainable practices in parks, playgrounds, and trail development.
Enable the department to run smoothly through the supervision and support of department leaders, seasonal staff, and volunteers which includes overseeing hiring, training, performance evaluations, and long-term staff planning for parks and recreation.
Willingly step in to assist with any department need or task; flexible and responsive to changing Town of Granby staff and community priorities.
Track and report usage metrics, financial data, and community satisfaction ratings to guide program development and funding decisions.
Other Duties
Responsible for opening and closing the Recreation Office daily, handling incoming phone calls and emails, and assisting walk-in visitors.
Collaborate and communicate with other Town of Granby departments regarding current activities and other important topics that impact town staff. This includes attendance at director meetings and at times, Board of Trustee meetings.
Connect with department staff regularly to discuss current and future programs, create and distribute program materials, and monitor arrangements underway. Also develop and distribute necessary program details (schedule, rules, and needed liability forms).
Hire, compensate and evaluate all contract instructors for enrichment / fitness classes and hire and monitor volunteers for special events and youth sports leagues.
Complete a program evaluation report (or ensure that staff completes report) for each program that Recreation Department conducts. This includes evaluating
participation, revenue, and feedback to determine viability for future viability.
Responsible for all scheduling, fees and deposits, and key exchange for community usage of the Granby Community Building and Soccer Dome.
Coordinate and complete usage request forms for department utilization of East Grand School District facilities.
Job Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strategic thinker with the ability to balance long-term planning with daily operational needs. Must possess excellent organizational skills.
Depth of knowledge in the field of sports and recreation, parks and trail systems, and facility design and development. Will participate in professional development opportunities to remain educated on changes within the recreation industry.
Thorough knowledge of and the ability to lead programs for a wide variety of ages, from toddlers to seniors. Must enjoy interacting with people of all ages.
Familiarity with municipal operations and budgeting, and proficiency with recreation registration and payment platforms.
Advanced grant writing and administration experience, including oversight of large grant programs.
Ability to lead public input processes, build community trust, and manage large, multi-faceted recreation and parks projects.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook. Must have the ability to learn recreation and desktop publishing software.
Ability to operate a 14-passenger vehicle.
Education or Formal Training and Experience
Bachelors degree in Recreation Management, Parks Administration, Public Administration or a related field with at least five-years experience in the industry
Obtain and maintain certifications relevant to this position such as Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP), CPR & First Aid, Universal Precautions, Medication Administration, and Certified Playground Safety Inspector. Willing to obtain incremental certifications relevant to the work.
Attend Parks & Recreation events and training locally and nationally to include conferences offered by the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association, the National Recreation and Park Association and other organizations related to this position.
Valid drivers license and clean driving record required.
Working Environment
Expect to work in both an office and an outdoor environment; exposure to various weather conditions is common.
Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and lifting light equipment.
Employee must have the ability to hear and communicate verbally.
Must be available for holiday, evening, and weekend programs and events.
